The region of Tarragona mainly comprises coastal areas, Tarragona itself being the star attraction. However, the inland territory has plenty of pretty villages and fertile pastures which grow grapes, olives, hemp, cereals and silk and marble and limestone quarries render the region both rich and heritage and natural resources.

Tortosa is one of the lesser known cities worth exploring, it has a unique charm which captivates visitor’s imagination transporting them back to days gone by. It’s an easy place to reach, less than one hour’s drive from Tarragona and the same via express train. The city of Tortosa is home to the exquisite Cathedral of St. Mary which is located in the central old town. It is constructed in traditional Catalan Gothic style with simple flying buttresses flanking the exterior and is truly a sight to behold. The apse is particularly striking with arched windows and terraces surrounding the entire Cathedral and the cloister showcases a pretty, yet elegant fountain as its focal point.

The convent of Santa Clara located in medieval Tortosa dates back to 1283 and can be visited too, the cloisters and gardens offer stunning refuge to all who visit. Montagut Palace, Despuig Palace and Bishop Palace are all dotted around this ancient city, stop to marvel at their architecture on the street corners before you continue your journey. The city was a residence of the Montcada and Knights Templar from the 13th century and the intriguing history of these buildings and the city of Tortosa itself make it a haven of discovery.
