On the Catalonia Medieval Village Trail

Catalonia is steeped in history and if you are lucky enough to rent a villa in the Costa Brava you will have the opportunity to experience it all. Leading from the coast near Calella de Palafrugell are several endearing medieval villages which should be on your itinerary to visit. If you are hiring a car or are a keen cyclist this is the perfect time to get out and about around Catalonia.

From Palafrugell take the C-31 road to Pals first of all. Pals is a pretty hilltop medieval village with charming squares, tapas bars, ceramic shops and stunning panoramic views from the cobbled streets and village walls. It’s a great place to begin your medieval village trail.

From here your next port of call should take you to the pretty village of Peratallada, the name means “carved stone” and it’s easy to see why, this compact fortified medieval town is built from carved stone from the moat which encircles it. The Romanesque church of Saint Stephen dates back to the 13th century and the now privately owned castle dominates the landscape. The town has old stone streets to meander through, artist’s galleries and a variety of restaurants. If you are visiting your vacation rental in Spain during the Autumn months this town hosts a magnificent Medieval festival which shouldn’t be missed.

Your next destination is less than an hour from Peratallada, you are driving to the medieval town of Besalú, nestled in the picturesque volcanic region of Catalonia in La Garrotxa. Spanning the Fluviàriver, cross the 12th century Romanesque bridge to achieve spectacular vistas and photographs. Once inside the town the arcaded streets and squares welcome you, there is a restored Jewish mikveh and the remains of a medieval synagogue to see plus the fragrant herb garden and the Museum of Miniatures. Besalú is one of the most well preserved medieval towns of significance in Catalonia. Stay a while, stroll the pretty streets and enjoy lunch in one of the tapas bars or restaurants before heading to your next destination.

Your final village to visit on the Catalonia Medieval village trail is Castellfollit de la Roca. If you made it to Besalú it is definitely worth the extra 13 km journey here. You come here for the view alone, there isn’t much else to see inside the village but this narrow medieval village perched on a cliffs edge will take your breath away, it’s like a narrow row of fairy-tale dwellings between the dense forest and the sky so don’t forget your camera for this one!
