Barcelona's Secrets
Barcelona is a city
full of attractions, sights and history, but little beknown to some, some of
the most interesting history is hidden in places you are unlikely to find
unless you know where to look. So book a Vacation villa in Barcelona, and get exploring today.
Exploring Barcelona's
Gothic quarter is an experience in itself, but there are a few hidden gems buried
amongst the obvious spectacular architecture. There is a small corner that is
pretty wonderful to see, but you just need to know where to look. The medical
patio is located at Calle Paradis 10, and it is in this patio that you will be
able to find four columns that once formed part of the temple of Augusto, and
are more than 2000 years old.
Museum of the History if Barcelona
There is no better
place to learn about the evolution of the city than in the Museum of the
History of Barcelona, located under the old town and filled with various ruins
and artefacts from the city's past. When you are walking the streets of
Barcelona or sitting in your Barcelonaaccommodation, you would have no idea that right under your feet you could
find an old Roman wall, a fish salting facility, wine making and the
foundations of an old cathedral.
Air raid shelters
Although people may
not realise it, Barcelona was at the heart of much of the bombing that took
place during the Spanish Civil War. For this reason, many air raid shelters
were constructed underneath the city to protect those that lived there. A few
of these shelters are open to the public today, such as the Plaza del Diamante.
The shelter is buried 13m underground and can hold a total of 200 people!
The aqueducts of Barcelona
In the past,
Barcelona had 2 aqueducts that were used to carry water into the city. Both
ended up at the Place Nova, which you can visit today and see a reconstruction
of this old water passage, as well as 2 of the original defence towers. If you
are interested in seeing more of the aqueduct, then remains can also be found
at Calle Duran y Bas, where four of the original arches are built into the
wall.
