Discover the DO Empordà Wine Route
Picture this:
you’re relaxing under the warm Spanish sun at your luxury villa with private pool on the Costa Dorada …. What’s missing? How about a nice bottle of wine?
Catalonia is actually a fantastic wine growing
region, and even has its own Designation of Origin (DO) classification:
Empordà. The Empordà wine region extends all the way from the town of Figueres
right up towards the border with France.
The Empordà region is heavily
regulated, and today there are officially 423 wine growers, 45 wineries, and
2020 hectares of vineyards here, producing 3.5 million bottles of wine each and
every year.
Why Empordà?
If you’re shopping for local
Catalan wines to enjoy at your villa in Spain, why opt for DO Empordà
wines? Well, Empordà is an excellent wine growing region thanks to the
beneficial soils and weather conditions. The soils tend to have good drainage,
and high granite content thanks to the proximity of the mountains. Weather is
typically windy, which reduces pests, warm, and can be quite wet in the winter
and spring; all of these make for great wine growing conditions, making Empordà
wines some of the best in Catalonia.
Empordà Wines
It doesn’t matter whether you
fancy a white or a red during your vacation in Spain, Empordà wines cover all bases. They even do rosés,
sweet, and sparkling wines, too. However, the wine not to be missed is the
Garnatxa de l´Emporda, which is unique to Catalonia. Made from the garnacha
grape, it’s very sweet!
The Wine Route
If you’re looking for things to
do during your holiday in Spain, then why not consider exploring the DO
Empordà wine route; an official trail through the region’s vineyards. The route
runs from the Mas Marés vineyards used by the Espelt Viticultors winegrowers,
all the way up to the Masia Serra and Vinyes dels Aspres wineries, located
right at the gateway to the stunning Pyrenees Mountain range.
